Grace Rhodes, a medical student, returns to her hometown of Grand Island, Nebraska, to care for her agoraphobic mother, June, who is confined to her yard and plagued by recurring nightmares involving children. Grace assumes responsibility for her younger siblings, James and Margaret, while taking a position at Dr. Larson's local clinic, where she has prior experience. Soon, James and Margaret exhibit mysterious symptoms, mirroring those of the children in June's unsettling dreams. Grace observes a growing number of children at the clinic presenting similar conditions. The symptoms escalate during the night as fevers surge dramatically among the afflicted children. However, in an inexplicable turn of events, the fevers abruptly subside, leaving Grace and the community puzzled about the underlying cause.
