Set in the fictional town of Gatlin, Nebraska, the narrative unfolds in an isolated agricultural community encircled by expansive cornfields. Following a year of failed crops, the townspeople turn to prayer, seeking divine intervention for a fruitful harvest. However, nine-year-old Isaac Croner manipulates the local children, leading them into the cornfields to establish a religious cult devoted to "He Who Walks Behind the Rows," a malevolent deity demanding human sacrifices. Under Isaac's leadership and with the assistance of his enforcer Malachai, the children revolt, executing all the adults in Gatlin. Two siblings, Job and Sarah, remain uninvolved, as they abstain from attending the cult's gatherings. Years later, Vicky and her husband Burt, en route to Seattle for Burt's new position as a physician, encounter the remnants of Gatlin's grim reality. Their journey takes a dark turn when they accidentally hit a boy on the road, only to discover he had been killed prior. Seeking aid, they meet Diehl, Gatlin's last surviving adult, who has been supplying the cult with fuel in exchange for his life. Despite his efforts to warn them away, Diehl is betrayed and killed by Malachai, plunging the couple deeper into the horrors of Gatlin.
