The story begins with a group of apes living on Earth, whose evolutionary leap is triggered by the appearance of a mysterious black monolith. This artifact instills in them the knowledge to use tools, enabling them to hunt and survive more effectively. The narrative then transitions to an era where human technology has advanced enough to facilitate lunar exploration. On the Moon, a similar black monolith is discovered at an American lunar base. Recognizing its artificial origins, authorities impose strict secrecy around the discovery, disseminating false information about a contagious disease at the base to maintain confidentiality. Dr. Floyd, who is sent to investigate the monolith, initiates research into its enigmatic properties. During the investigation, it is revealed that the monolith functions as a transmitter, emitting a sharp signal directed toward Jupiter, hinting at a deeper cosmic mystery yet to unfold.
