Set in the near future relative to 1984, the narrative begins in 1999 when NASA discovers a monolithic structure on the Moon, followed by a larger, proportionate counterpart near Jupiter's orbit. In 2001, the spacecraft Discovery One is dispatched to investigate, but the mission ends in tragedy due to a malfunction in its onboard AI, HAL 9000, resulting in crew fatalities and the disappearance of both the ship and its sole survivor, Bowman. Nine years later, in 2010, the Russian space agency approaches Dr. Floyd, who has been demoted following the prior mission's failure. The Russians propose a joint mission to explore the derelict Discovery One and request Floyd's expertise to reactivate HAL, potentially uncovering critical information.
