C.C. Baxter, commonly known as Bud, is an employee at an insurance company who resides alone in a rented apartment. His neighbors, a married couple of doctors, often misunderstand his lifestyle due to the peculiar circumstances surrounding his living arrangements. Bud's apartment becomes a secret rendezvous spot for several of his superiors, all of whom are married but maintain extramarital relationships. They borrow his apartment at different times to meet their mistresses, offering Bud the prospect of career advancement in exchange for his cooperation. During these periods, Bud is forced to vacate his home and spend time elsewhere, leading to frequent misconceptions by his neighbors, who mistakenly perceive him as someone with a promiscuous lifestyle due to the noises emanating from his apartment during these visits.
