Set against the backdrop of the waning days of the Irish Civil War in 1923, the story unfolds on the fictional island of Inisherin. Combe, a respected Irish folk musician who shares a quiet life with his loyal dog Sammy, decides to sever ties with his longtime friend and drinking companion, Pádraic. Though Combe is admired by the island's residents for his charm and talent, he finds himself disillusioned with his mundane existence and resolves to dedicate his remaining years to creating music that will leave a lasting legacy. This abrupt change leaves Pádraic deeply unsettled, as he struggles to cope with losing one of his few close friends. Despite Pádraic's repeated attempts to mend their relationship, Combe grows increasingly resistant, issuing a grim ultimatum: each time Pádraic interrupts or tries to converse with him, Combe will cut off one of his own fingers using a pair of shears. The escalating tension between the two former friends sets the stage for a poignant exploration of isolation, ambition, and the cost of human connection.
