In the summer of 1981, nine-year-old Cáit, a quiet and introspective girl from a large, impoverished family in rural Ireland, is sent to live with distant relatives due to her mother’s pregnancy. Her home life, marked by neglect, leaves her struggling to find her place both at school and within her family. Upon arriving at the home of Eibhlín and Seán Cinnsealach, Cáit is met with warmth and kindness, particularly from Eibhlín, who provides her with care, guidance, and a sense of stability. Eibhlín teaches her household and farm responsibilities while emphasizing safety, such as cautioning her about the deep well on their property. Cáit’s initial adjustment is marked by moments of vulnerability, including fear of unfamiliar surroundings and bedwetting. Eibhlín addresses these challenges with understanding, even purchasing new clothes for Cáit after her luggage is left behind. Gradually, Cáit begins to experience a nurturing environment, contrasting sharply with the neglect she has known, setting the stage for personal growth and emotional healing.
