In a contemporary setting, young Johnny McGowan, orphaned after a tragic traffic accident, relocates to his grandfather's castle in Scotland. There, he discovers a magical wish tree and befriends a baby dragon he names Yowler. Over the next 15 years, Johnny matures alongside Yowler, who grows to his full size. Following his grandfather's passing, Johnny faces mounting financial challenges tied to the estate. When documentary filmmaker Bob Armstrong, his daughter Beth, and pilot Brownie McGee encounter Yowler, Bob persuades Johnny to lease Yowler to Lester McIntyre, a businessman offering to cover the castle's taxes. Motivated by financial relief and his budding interest in Beth, Johnny agrees. However, Yowler suffers mistreatment in McIntyre's amusement park, revealing the businessman’s exploitative intentions. Realizing the gravity of his decision, Johnny, with the support of his new allies, resolves to rescue Yowler and confront McIntyre’s unethical practices.
