Alice Hyatt, a former singer residing in Socorro, New Mexico, faces a sudden tragedy when her husband, Donald, a Coca-Cola delivery driver, dies in a traffic accident. Left with limited resources, Alice decides to sell most of her belongings and relocate to Monterey, California, with her young son, Tommy, in hopes of reviving the singing career she abandoned upon marriage. However, financial constraints lead them to settle temporarily in Phoenix, Arizona, where Alice secures work as a lounge singer. During her time there, she becomes involved with Ben, a younger man who initially appears single but is later revealed to be married. The situation escalates dangerously when Ben's wife confronts Alice, prompting Ben to violently threaten Alice and vandalize her apartment. Concerned for their safety, Alice and Tommy are forced to flee Phoenix and continue their journey elsewhere.
