Prominent gangsters such as Dean O'Banion, George "Bugs" Moran, and Earl "Hymie" Weiss competed fiercely to dominate the illicit liquor market. However, Big Jim Colosimo, due to his advanced age and comfortable lifestyle, showed little interest in pursuing this profitable enterprise. Recognizing the potential of the situation, Al Capone persuaded Johnny Torrio to orchestrate Colosimo's assassination, clearing the path for Torrio to assume control as Chicago's preeminent mob leader.
