In August 1914, amidst the backdrop of escalating tensions between Germany and Britain, English Methodist missionaries Samuel and Rose Sayer reside in German East Africa, dedicated to their work in the village of Kungdu. Their supplies arrive via the African Queen, a modest steamboat captained by Charlie Allnut, a resourceful but uncouth Canadian mechanic. Despite their differences in demeanor, the Sayers tolerate Charlie's mannerisms. When Charlie informs them of the outbreak of war, the siblings resolve to stay in the village. However, their decision proves perilous as German colonial forces invade, burning the settlement and conscripting its inhabitants. Samuel's attempt to intervene results in a violent confrontation, leaving him gravely ill and ultimately succumbing to fever. In the wake of this tragedy, Charlie aids Rose in burying her brother before they flee aboard the African Queen, embarking on an uncertain journey amid the chaos of war.
