Clark Kent and Lois Lane travel to Silsby, a small town known for housing the world's deepest oil well, to cover a story. Their visit takes a dark turn when two unusual dwarf-like humanoid creatures emerge from the well shaft during the night, causing the elderly night watchman to die from fright. The following day, Lois and Clark investigate the scene, discovering the watchman's lifeless body. While Clark and the foreman examine the surrounding area for possible foul play, Lois catches sight of one of the creatures. Despite her insistence, her account is dismissed by those present. Meanwhile, the foreman confides in Clark that drilling operations had ceased due to concerns about striking radium instead of oil. He further reveals glowing ore samples collected during various stages of drilling, raising questions about the well's contents and the implications of their discovery.
