Three World War II veterans—USAAF captain Fred Derry, U.S. Navy petty officer Homer Parrish, and U.S. Army sergeant Al Stephenson—find themselves on a flight back to their hometown of Boone City, each carrying the weight of their wartime experiences and the lives they left behind. Fred Derry, once a soda jerk at a local drugstore, had entered into a hasty marriage with Marie, a woman whose interests seem more aligned with nightlife and financial security than enduring commitment. While Fred's combat pay as an Air Force officer provided financial stability during his absence, Marie has spent her time working in a nightclub, indulging in the social scene. As these men return to civilian life, the challenges of reintegration and the realities of their pre-war identities loom large, setting the stage for their personal journeys in adapting to post-war America.
