Matt Scudder, a former Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy, finds his life unraveling after a tragic incident during a drug bust leads to the fatal shooting of a small-time dealer in front of the man's family. Struggling with alcoholism and plagued by blackouts, Scudder's downward spiral costs him his career, his marriage, and strains his relationship with his daughter. Seeking solace, he attends an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where a cryptic note from a woman directs him to an exclusive gambling club owned by Chance Walker. The club, perched atop a hill and accessible only by funicular, introduces Scudder to a web of intrigue. There, he encounters Sunny, a call girl who feigns being his girlfriend, and Angel Maldonado, a high-stakes gambler captivated by another call girl, Sarah. As Scudder navigates this shadowy world, his troubled past and uncertain future collide in unexpected ways.
