The story centers on Joan Wilder, a successful yet solitary romance novelist whose life is rich in imagination but lacks excitement. One day, she receives a mysterious map from her sister, which points to the location of a hidden treasure deep within the South American jungle. Shortly after, Joan learns that her sister has been kidnapped by a group of criminals who demand the map as ransom.
