One day, Kogoro Mori received a request from stage actress Maki Shuri regarding a warning letter from the infamous Kaitou Kid. The letter mentioned cryptic terms such as "Romeo, Juliet, Victor, Bravo" and stated that the target was the "Gem of Fate," a sapphire ring. Mori deduced that Kid intended to steal the ring during the final act of the play "Josephine," which depicts the life of Napoleon's wife. At Shuri's insistence, Mori and his group proceeded to a theater in Shiodome. At the venue, they encountered Inspector Nakamori, who revealed that Shinichi Kudo had already arrived as an assistant. Conan quickly suspected that this "Shinichi" was actually Kaitou Kid in disguise. However, after Nakamori physically verified his identity, Conan decided to observe further due to the uncanny resemblance between Kid and Shinichi. During the play's climax, Conan spotted Kid making his move and pursued him to the rooftop. The two engaged briefly before Conan feigned a fall, using his backpack glider to follow Kid. Despite his efforts, Kid ultimately escaped using a hang glider, leaving Conan unable to apprehend him.
