Upon arriving in Marietta, Georgia, Johnnie Gray, a train engineer for the Western & Atlantic Railroad, visits Annabelle Lee, whom he deeply admires alongside his cherished locomotive, The General. Shortly thereafter, news of the American Civil War reaches the town, prompting Annabelle's father and brother to immediately enlist in the Confederate Army. Eager to win Annabelle's approval, Johnnie attempts to enlist as well, striving to be among the first to join. However, he is rejected due to his critical role as an engineer, a decision not disclosed to him at the time. As he leaves the enlistment line, Annabelle's family interprets his departure as reluctance to serve, leading Annabelle to declare that she will not speak to him again unless he dons a soldier's uniform. This misunderstanding creates tension between Johnnie and Annabelle, complicating their relationship amidst the backdrop of war.
