After India's independence, Indira Gandhi emerged as a significant figure within the Congress Party, initially perceived as a figurehead controlled by the Syndicate. However, she gradually established her authority, challenging their positions, including on Operation Searchlight, and engaging with international powers to strengthen her leadership. Her decisive actions during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh, earned her widespread acclaim and solidified her popularity across the nation. In 1975, a ruling by the Allahabad High Court invalidated her election, leading her to declare a national emergency, citing threats to democracy. During this period, civil liberties were curtailed, press freedom was suppressed, and opposition leaders were imprisoned. Her son, Sanjay Gandhi, gained significant influence and implemented controversial policies such as forced sterilizations and slum clearances, which drew criticism. Although Indira considered ending the emergency on 15 August 1975, the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Bangladesh led her to reconsider. Her tenure during this period remains a complex chapter in Indian history, marked by both decisive leadership and contentious policies.
